Everything you need to know about tank overhauls

What is my duty as the owner of a tank system?

According to the Water Protection Act (GSchG, Art. 3 & 22), every construction company is "obliged to take all due care required by the circumstances to avoid adverse effects on the water".

Fuel oil or diesel tank systems with a capacity of more than 450 liters are not only subject to reporting and approval, but must also be regularly maintained and inspected. The following inspection intervals apply:

  • Mobile construction site tank: subject to inspection over 450 liters, at least every 5 years
  • Stationary tank system/storage tank (e.g. in the depot): at least every 10 years

The tank inspection must be carried out by an authorized specialist company such as RUBAG. This tank inspection must be carried out independently and without being requested to do so.

In some cantons and in Liechtenstein, a tank inspection booklet is also mandatory.

Unannounced official inspections are no longer the exception. As the owner of a tank system subject to mandatory inspection, you must have an inspection certificate to hand at all times and be able to prove that all the necessary precautions have been taken to guarantee the functionality of your tank. We support you in this!

What can happen without a tank overhaul?

Condensation forms in the tank and, over time, oil deposits. These sludgy deposits collect together with the condensation at the bottom, which can lead to clogged burner lines and malfunctions. Leaks in the tank can also be a possible consequence, which in the worst case can cause devastating groundwater pollution and result in high fines.

All of this has financial and environmental consequences. By regularly checking and maintaining your tank, we can detect and rectify these defects at an early stage.

It also makes sense from an insurance point of view to keep to a regular inspection schedule. Otherwise, in the event of damage, your insurance company may claim that the tank has been poorly maintained and refuse to cover the costs.

How does such a tank overhaul work at RUBAG?

During the tank inspection, our tank specialists ensure that your tank meets all legal requirements. We service the tank, clean it inside and out and rectify any defects. Your tank can also be repainted or labeled on request.
